It would depend upon when do you plan on using it again. If you were leaving it for a few hours I would say stand by would be your best bet. If you were turning it off for the night, the best thing to do is to shut it down. Hibernation mode would save more electricy and still boots up quicker then a full shut-down, but I find that the computer winds up hanging more often then not, requiring a restart anyways. I would either use stand-by or shut-down for that reason.

The computer itself does not use the most electricity, it's your monitor, so either way shut-off the monitor if you want to save. The power consumed by your computer is minimal compared to the energy usage of the monitor.

I was told, by someone who's supposed to know, that putting it on standby, causes wear on the hard drive when restarting.

It is better to put it in hibernation as this does not involve restart but still switches the machine off.

This is what I use most of the time, but I still switch off every 2-3 days so that my various spy/virus/repair scans can check out the system.

**Adding to Michael's comment, I've never had to do any restarts using hibernation.

Turn it off

standby still makes the discs spin on the hard drive, which wears it down which can cause the drive to fail in the future...

A choice between the two? Turn it off - it will also help prevent the computer from overheating, too...

I've found out that I have to restart it anyway so I think it's better to turn it off. Saves from the electricity bill.

I always turn it off. Restarting doesn't take very long, it saves electricity, and it is impossible for anyone to hack in when the computer is off.

Well I was told by someone who builds computers that it is better to put it on standby then shutting it down because it takes more electricity to start up and shut down then it does to put it on standby
