The buyers don't have a legal leg to stand on.
I know, because the exact same thing happened to me the day I moved into my house...the AC compressor died in the middle of summer.
Relax...you have no obligation at all. They did a home inspection before settlement...that's the buyer's chance to find things that are or potentiall are wrong with it, and ask the seller to fix it. They didn't bring up the AC, so it's their tough luck.

I'm not a lawyer (but I play one on the internet), but I don't see that you have any responsibility. I guess it could depend on the state you live in, but once a house is inspected and sold, the deal is done and the new homeowner is responsible for his house.

Otherwise, what's to keep the guy from coming to you a year from now and saying the furnace is out and you have to fix it?

it is a case of "caveat emptor", buyers beware. In Australia, prospective home purchasers do an inspection before handover day and anything not working must be fixed. Breakdowns after that, are the responsibility of the new owner.

You are in no way obligated to fix it. They should have purchased a home owners warranty. Don't take my word for it call a lawyer for a free consultation.
