I haven't written a book before, but I do write poetry and plays. I think the best writers know how to use concrete imagery, or all five senses so the writing comes alive.

I am a professional journalist and I would say, develop your own style. In other words, what works for others might not be what works for you. All writers have different ways of inspiring themselves from writing a certain number of pages a day, to investing a certain amount of time in study or practice, to just sitting down and writing when the spirit moves them.
I would also recommend that you practice not using "chat write". It is a really bad habit that writers can't afford. Along with that I would recommend a grammar class. It may be that your grammar is excellent but then it can just serve as an update/practice. Additionally, develop a very thick skin because writing is all about being criticized and not being discouraged.
I would start with short stories first. Writing a book can be a daunting undertaking and can be very overwhelming. Build your confidence first and find what you love best.
I used to think I wanted to write a book, got into journalism and discovered it is my true passion. Plus the regular income is a huge plus!
Good Luck.

The first thing to do is the most obvious thing. Write. Just keep doing it. The first rule to remember is to get everything down in the first draft, whether it makes sense or not. After everything is written, you can always go back and change things. But don't start editing a project before you've even finished it.
Once you get to the stage where you are comfortable with showing it to others, do that, especially if you trust their opinions.
If possible, join a writers' group. One of the better ones on line is called "Forward Motion for Writers" and you can find more information on that particular online workship at www.fmwriters.com.

You must be disciplined... write every day, even if it's garbage. If you plan to write fiction, your writing will be so much more believable if you create character so vividly in your mind, you know every minor detail about them. There are lots of books available with exercises for helping you along the way (two of my favorites are What If? and Writing Down the Bones).
The other very, very important thing is to be able to handle criticism. While we writers may feel that our works are our children, the truth is, when we go forward and show them to anyone, we are marching them to the guillotine. You have to be thick skinned, to be able to honestly wade through others' opinions and criticisms, to change things that you think work (because maybe something really does work better).
Developing writing to share with a writing group is a great way to get started; you'll meet likeminded people and you'll get lots of support.
Good luck!

i'm not a professional writer or anything but the way i would start is by writing your story (ok, i guess that's pretty obvious) then i'd show it to friends or teachers (if you're still in school) anyone who could give you advice and would be comfortable making suggestions. a great resource on how to write well is called the element of style. it has great tips about how to make your story pleasant to read.

My advice is don't think to much about it. Dont be woried about what other people think. Have a few good friends that will read it and be as harsh as possible, talk about why they think that and then change it if you feel to do so. Just write like it would be in the real world (even if it is fantasy) .
