Go to http://www.4allmemory.com It is my favorite memory outlet. They even tell you exactly how much rams your computer can take and they are cheap. 1300 is the normal price, adding ram is cheaper to buy on your own than to upgrade through your computer company.
I upgraded my laptop to 2 gigs on my own otherwise I would be paying another $400. Instead I paid $200 and installed it on my own. XP does require 512MB or more to run smoothly. 1 Gig would be perfect for your computer.

No, Windows XP will run slowy on anything less than 256MB of Ram. Anything more is better.
Firstly you have 512MB of ram and 32 MB is going to the onboard screencard as the other gentleman have said. No none has done you in, it is quite a common practice to sell computers with onboard screen cards. Onboard screen cards do what most users need them to do. if you need better graphics, err wait the DV1000 is a laptop right?
Your computer is likely slower because of something else. Most laptops ship with 5400 rpm harddrives, this will be the first bottle neck.

Well it seems to me that you don't know how to shop PC's for what you need them for.
Replacing the video card will free up ram as i'm sure yours is integrated in the motherboard. Also windows XP recommends 128 megs of ram but we all know its alot better with at least 1 gig of ram.
If your pc is running slow then you probably have to many programs loading at startup. Read this and it should help: http://www.informationweek.com/shared/printableArticle.jhtml?articleID=6508377

Most likely it is 512 but 32 of it is "Shared" with the video meaning your onboard video is using your ram.
I believe 256 is minimum to run XP, but I wouldnt recommend trying, with 512 it is tolerable but definitely should have 1gb or more if you are trying to do anything more than word, excel or web surfing.

480Mb is doubtful...
It probably has 512Mb, but probably has shared video of 32Mb...
Shared video memory is used for cheap computers instead of a separate video card.
You can try adjusting the shared amount in the BIOS to a smaller value (either 8Mb or 16Mb), but what you really want to do is add a REAL video card and get all your RAM back!

So you would buy more ram which propably they manufacture themselves. Of course the ram alone would cost more than in the computer so it's just a way to make more money

the minimum requirement for ram to run win xp is either 64 or 128 mb. 512 mb is required for optimal performance.

Yeah they all do. They charge for the upgrade and most people are too stupid to put 1gb or 2gb of Ram in there.

There is not that much differents between 480 and 512. I don't even know how they would get to 480.

Computer Slow
Download and then run startup.exe at:
http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......
Can't live without it and windows...
Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.
Other things to try:
