It means looking on the bright side of things.

The most traditional cliche is when you have 1/2 a glass of water, the optimist will see it as half full rather than half empty. But it's not just that, it's making the best of what you've been dealt with.

So, you planned to go hiking but it rains. The pessimist lets it ruin his day. The optimist decides to use it as an opportunity to see that movie he's been wanting to see.

The pessimist will assume that if you didn't buy movie tickets online before going that they will be sold out by the time you get there. The optimist will assume that there will be enough, and if there aren't, they'll simply go to a different show.

A pessimist will assume that an empty restaurant sucks, otherwise it would have patrons. An optimist assumes that it's empty because it's still undiscovered.

But, optimism isn't being naive. An optimist will still carry a spare tire, they'll just hope they never have to use it. : )

Optimism is the unrealistic expectation that everything will turn out all right. Optimists tend to be happy idiots. They believe that George Bush knows what he's doing in Iraq. They believe that lowering taxes will help pay off the national debt. They buy mobile homes in Florida. If female, they tend to be blonds. Beware of optimists at all costs; they could talk you into accepting their view of life through rose-colored glasses.

Pessimists correctly believe that nothing will go right. They don't expect anything from our involvement in Iraq except for dead bodies and record earnings for huge corporations that get contracts to repair the damage that we do. They believe that our national debt will someday come due and bury our grandchildren in such debt that the U.S. becomes a third-world country. They wouldn't move to Florida even if they were offered an underground bunker. If female, they tend to be bald. They see the world through binoculars turned backward.

Realists simply go crazy. The see the glass as too big.

So, don't try to be an optimist, pessimist, or realist. Become a transcendentalist. They look at things like global warming, world-wide pollution, species extinction, World War III, and crabgrass as insignificant details. They're into the big picture. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Optimism, the opposite of pessimism, exemplifies a lifeview where one looks upon the world as a positive place. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good. They have a so-called "positive" outlook on life, believing that things will work out in the end. A common conundrum illustrates optimism versus pessimism with the question, does one regard a given glass of water as half full or as half empty? Conventional wisdom expects optimists to reply with half full and pessimists to respond with half empty.

Is as simple as seeing glass of water as half full or half empty..The optimist thinking that it will become more full, the pessimist thinking it will continue to empty. Everything having a negative or positive connotation.

ellie,
Here is something for you to think about. A lot of schools of philosophy, teach that, "What you think, becomes your world." I am inclined to agree with that statement, based on 53 years of observation and experience. If you focus your mind on positive things, your life experiences will become more positive, in time. It works for both positive, and negative. I have seen it change my life events in amazingly good ways, and I have seen people destroy themselves, because of their negative thought patterns. It is difficult at first, because you don't get instant results. Sometimes, it may take months, or years, before your old thought patterns have played themselves out. It doesn't cost anything, just takes practice, a lot of practice.

Optimism means looking at bad things in a good way. Like if your leg broke by some crazy boy operating a log machine, you could say "**** that boy! Imma ***** slap that ******* boy!" or you could say " Oh well, at least I didn't break my whole body.

Yes, you could be optimistic. I think you will be happier like that.

optimism is seeing the good sides of things, like 4 example, "oh no! u dropped your ice cream! But that's alright, this means I won't risk getting a brain freeze." And pessimism is seeing the bad side of things, like 4 example "Oh no! u dropped your ice cream! What a waste of a dollar and twelve cents!" hope this helps, *so_tru*

For me it means counting your blessings and having HOPE. Expect something good even if bad things are happening to you. It comes especially when you pray a lot.
