I have a bunch of old cell phones. I intend to put them in my family member's cars with the car chargers to call 911 if the rumor is true. If not are they worth selling in a garage sale? Or even better do you know of any batter women's shelters in Michigan that I can donate them to. Thanks!

Yes, old cell phones will dial 9-1-1.

Keep in mind, that the cell phone is still registered to you and emergency personel will know who the phone is registered to.

In the case where you still have the same phone number, but just upgraded to a different phone (with the same carrier) and you call 9-1-1 from your old phone and hang up, they will call you back... on your current phone.

As long as there is battery power to the cell phone you can dial 911 but giving them to a battered womans shelter is a great idea. Ask your cell phone provider as they sometimes will take care of them for you.

I don't know about being able to dial 911 when it's deactivated but when the keys are locked on my phone I can still dial 911.

Yes, as long as the battery is charged. That's why everyone else pays a fee on their monthly bills for 911 charge.

You can also donate them to several other charitable organizations, such as the Salvation Army.
