It's not a particular state. "Actually, Springfield is not supposed to be in any state in particular. In fact, Matt Groening has said that springfield is just ment to be a regular city that could be anywhere in midle America. The reason they chose Springfield as the name is that it is apparantly the most common city name in the US. Hopefully this answers your question." In many episodes it has been mentioned or hinted that they are in Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois, but actually it's none of those and those states are just given to throw fans off. You might as well have asked is there a God. This is a highly debated topic. There actually is no state that they live in the Creators of the Simpsons have taken elements from all states which have a Springfield and kind of combined them.

the simsons are from northern Kentucky but every time the will say, point where the state is (usually Bart) hidden. and there are a lot of Springfield's but the most famous(not in Simmons) is the capital of the state of Illinois

^ not true.... there is ONE episode, where Troy McClure is doing a documentary on the life of the simpsons... where he mentions them being a 'small Missouri family' It was many years ago I saw it...
