He may end up as almost a consensus all-time #1 (which I would not mind seeing), but at age 24, and with "only" 8 major titles, I would not put him there yet.

As I've answered elsewhere, I believe that the all-time #1 has to be Rod Laver. The man won the (complete) Grand Slam twice, and 7 years apart at that (1962 and 1969). He, for all intents and purposes, was barred from playing and winning any majors from 1963-68. Assuming, he won 'only' twice per year during those 6 years, he would have won 23 major titles instead of 11. A very dominant player in his era!

I'd probably put Sampras (14 majors) ahead of Federer for now, based on longevity.

But even if I put Federer at around #3 in the modern era (in the last 40-50 years), at age 24, that's not too shabby.

NO hes not cuz he cant beat nadal on clay so that does not make him the greatest player. the greatest player has to win a few grandslams and nadal is the only obstacle in federers way. therefore no federer isnt that greatest player but hes good but not great. Sampras defines great. :)

He is good but not the greatest. Billie Jean King is the greatest and always will be.

I think he has to watch out because he might not even end up being the best player of his era.....that could quite possibly be Nadal

Yeah, but hes getting boring now - he just wins everything. He should give Roddick a chance!

I believe so. He has already accomplished enough to put him there so everything else from here on out will be icing on the cake. Can you say 'dynasty"?
