I am a college sophomore and I would like to compete in the State Miss USA Competion. What do you think is an "appealing look" for a pageant? Hair Up or Down? Bikini or One-Piece? Shapely Body or Pencil Skinny? Dark Hair or Highlights? Does anyone know what to look for in a prospective Beauty Queen??? lm not a conceded person, I just look for ways to improve myself, (without completely changing myself, of course).

I am 22 and I also compete in the State Miss USA Pageants. I have been competing in pageants since I was 11, so let me give you a few tips:

Hair down is a plus, but not a must.

Swimsuit should depend on your figure. If you have a nice stomach, wear a 2 piece; but if you are a little heavier than you like, wear a 1 piece - one thing judges do not want to look at is someone who should be in a one piece, but they squeeze into that little bikini just cause they want to wear a bikini. Also, you can go for a new trend in swimsuits which is a one piece, but it has the sides cut out or a different shape to it. Take a look at these for examples:

Interview suit: let this be simple, but elegant. Wear simple jewelry - don't go overboard with flashy earrings & rings.

Evening gown: wear something that reflects your personality - again simplicity is always better than going overboard.

I'm not really sure about the dark hair or highlights thing... Whatever you feel looks best is what you should do.

Be confident & have fun.

Who knows, we might be competing on the same stage one day!

Good Luck!

Been there and done that. Beauty pageants are only fun when you place well. I was so into that. I had the long hair, the short hair, the athletic body, hi-lights, low-lights, dark hair, light hair...
You don't need a beauty pageant to improve yourself. I hope you know that.
You can change things about yourself - hair color, eye color, your weight, your style...BUt you are who you are.
I am a mom of 3 now. That's what improved myself.
If you do it, have fun. Don't lose sight of who you really are.
Dont forget that you are lovely, just as you are at this moment.
BUt for the record - hair up, with little tendrils trailing along your jaw line. Definitly go for high-lights - it's the season. Everyone will be doing the 2 piece - follow the expample. Shapely is better. Men TRULY want to look at a woman with curves.
