Particles in space came together and created objects called planetoids. These planetoids condensed into the Sun and other stellar bodies, including the planets.
P.S. salama s, don't tell him/her to lie to his son. He/She will regret listening to you when his/her son takes astronomy.
The Bible is a religious, not a factual historical and scientific, work.

The earth was formed by molten debis from the newly formed sun. The debis came together to form the earth. Due to the earth's postion from the sun, it is what it is today, unlike Jupiter and Saturn (gas giants). So any way, the earth cooled over billions of years.
To make the layers we have now (lithosphere, inner core, outer core, etc). It shows the progess of cooling. Theoretically, the inner core has the same, or close to it , temperature as it did when the molten material formed together.
This is all in a nutshell and very simple (maybe too simple?), you can typy it into google or check out discovery channels website.

Matter drifting through the galaxy eventually coalesced to form our Sun. This created a gravity well which other planetary matter fell into and started to orbit the sun. As this matter coalesced, different kinds formed different types of clumps. The rocky matter coalesced to form mercury, venus, earth, mars, and pluto and all the moons in the solar system. The gas giants: jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune formed from different types of matter . It was all caused by gravity.
To imagine what a gravity well is in curved space, imagine one of those really, really big trampolines--the kind usually on the roof of WalMart with the big price tag on it. Now, place a bowling ball in the middle of it. The bowling ball represents the sun. Now, gently roll a marble towards the bowling ball, but not directly at it, just off to the side. The marble rolls in a straight line along the curve of the surface of the trampoline. The marble is the earth.
Stars, like our sun, form from hydrogen gas in nebulae. Planets form from heavier elements that were created in the interiors of different types of stars and then thrown out into space when the star goes through different phases in its life.

Hmm how to break down the accretion theory for a nine year old...
Imagine a big circular field of dust around a big central mound.
Imagine all that stuff spinning around in circles around the center.
As it spins it clumps up into blobs, little ones, big ones, medium sized ones.
Once the blobs get so big they start pulling on each other. They smack into each other eventually there are only a few really big ones just spinning around the central blob sweeping up the crumbs that are left over from the original big field. They're just far enough apart not to be able to move each other around too much.
We're on the third big one out from the center.

Looks like we got some "know-nothings" here. I guess I better go stir the pot in the religion & spirituality area. I think I'll use...
Do creationists understand infinity? The bible starts "In the beginning", does that mean god has a beginning? How long was god sitting around in the dark before creating light? If the bible is the word of god, does that mean god didn't have anything to say before "the beginning"?

Here is a great FREE video called "A Question of Origins" that will help your son understand. It's not technical, just matter of fact. The first chapter explains the basic Theory of Evolution, but the rest of the chapters explain why it can't be so, and this movie is produced by a plethora of real live scientists who have made it their life's work to understand. It runs for about 45 minutes.

Here go to this site it explains it pretty well. It tells you exactly how the earth was created and the phases it was done in as well as the creation of man in the image of God.
