They are probably leather and so no washing is good for them. If you wash them too much the leather will disintegrate and look even worse than some stains. Best to wipe them with a rag just slightly moistened after every time you get them dirty but lets face it, no white shoe will be white forever.

NEVER put your shoes in the washing machine! Thats shoe murder and there are laws against that. Soap and water on a paper towel is a 'I have two minutes to make my shoes look decent' If you want them gleaming and you have some time do this: AJAX or some kind of cleanser with bleach in it. Make a paste. use papertowel or brush of some kind and start ta scrubbin'! then rinse with a clean and wet paper towel then dry. Or if you wanna spend like 10-20 dollars go get some shoe cleaner.

dont listen to the soap thing because that ruins your shoes horribly and makes it smell or have a soapy ick residue stained on your shoes and dries out the material and the washing machine just makes them very wet for a very long time...you should buy a white cleaner shoe polish bottle/cleaner sold in most shoe stores. there are many different brands but usually shoe stores have this product near the register or you can ask someone for it. it works well.

I throw all of our shoes right in the washing machine with a load of laundry then let air dry. All shoes even leather ones. If they are white and/or really super dirty throw them in a bucket with some hot water and oxyclean let sit over night then throw back in washer. They will look like brand new. One last thing if they are like leather boots or something that is really expensive leather then you get saddle soap scrub rinse let dry then put polish or leather moisturizer on. Dr Martins makes a nice moisturizer.

I'm a shoe fanatic too. I always wash my shoes in the washer & let them air dry. Haven't had any problems that way. I'm like you I can't stand dirt on my shoes.
