It varies for each woman. I hadn't had one by my 6 week check up (I think I had it at 3-4 months). You shouldn't have sex until then, so ask your doc at the appoint about sex and protection. If you're breastfeeding, you probably won't go back on birth control. It's an old tale that you can't get preggo while you breastfeed. Many women have found themselves with kids a year or less apart believing in that. Just remember to ask your doc all these questions as each person is different. He'll keep you on track.

Your period will come back within 6 - 8 weeks after the birth.

I got mine about 4 months after birth. I was breastfeeding and that slows it down. I was started on birth control at my six week check up. You don't need your period to get your birth control.

After you have the baby, you bleed for up to 6 weeks. If you are nursing you will not have a period. If you are nursing you can go on a nursing birth control that won't hurt your milk.

I nursed until my baby was 12 months old, and got my period the same month. They dont start you on birth control until your period comes back, so use alternative methods of protection until then.

Your period usually starts within a few days after giving birth, most people start the day after and it can last for a couple weeks.

From what I know you can not get pregnant on your period

Everyone is different. Mine didn't come until I stopped breast feeding, six months later!

You might want to protect yourself until you are able to begin birth control again.

Talk to your doctor.

Well... I bled for 6 weeks after having the baby so I guess directly after.
