I'm 16 weeks along and doing "great" my doc says. But still hearing those women talk about 2nd trimester miscarriages is worrying me a little. I've never had one and neither has anyone in my family, and I'm in excellent health, and the babies heart rate was 155 on wednesday! This is my 1st pregnancy am I just worrying for no reason?

I wouldn't worry about it. If you continue to stay healthy, your baby should continue to grow. If you feel anything is wrong, just go to your doctor. Better safe than sorry. Good Luck.

Yep, worrying for no reason! I was exactly the same way, I still am a little bit. Second trimester miscarriages are VERY rare, I'll show you why below. Rest assured, when you do feel the baby kick on a regular basis, that is a great reassurance that everything is going along as planned. It also helped me to realise that this pregnancy will be ongoing and viable, when I had my 19 week Morphology Ultrasound, and found out that my baby is a girl!

In the first trimester, a woman will have a 15-20% chance of miscarriage. This is based on a woman who has not yet had an ultrasound to check for fetal viability.

A woman who has had an ultrasound after about 7 weeks, will have about only a 10% chance of miscarriage. This is because many of the problems that cause early miscarriages have been ruled out, such as a Blighted Ovum pregnancy which causes 80% of all first trimester miscarriages, molar pregnancy, and ectopic pregnancy.

After the twelve week mark, a woman has an even more reduced chance of miscarriage, down to about 3%. This is because a certain percentage of all pregnancy losses, occur in the first trimester.

I can say, it is fairly safe for you not to worry! Second trimester miscarriages are normally not caused by a problem with the fetus, but with the mother, as the article below will explain to you.

"While it's essentially true that there's little reason to worry about miscarriage after the first trimester, it does occasionally happen that a fetus is lost between the 12th and 22nd weeks. This is known as a late miscarriage and it is rare in healthy women with an uneventful, low risk pregnancy. After the 22nd week, when the fetus usually weighs over 500 grams and there is a possibility that it can survive with specialised care, its delivery is considered a premature birth and not a miscarriage.

Unlike the causes of early miscarriages, which ae frequently related to the fetus, the causes of second-trimester miscarriages are usually related to either the placenta or the mother. The placenta may seperate prematurely from the uterus, be implanted abnormally, or fail to produce adequate hormones to maintain the pregnancy. The mother may have had surgery that affected her ability to hold a pregnancy. Or she may suffer from a serious infection, uncontrolled chronic illness, severe malnutrition, an abnormally shaped uterus, or an incompetent cervix that opens prematurely. Serious physical trauma, such as that sustained in an accident, rarely triggers miscarriage at any stage in pregnancy.

Early symptoms of a midtrimester miscarriage include a pink vaginal discharge for several days, or a scant brown discharge for several weeks. Should you experience such a discharge, don't panic - it could be nothing serious. But do call your practitioner the day you first notice it. If you have heavy bleeding with or without cramping, call your practitioner immediately or go to the hospital emergency room"

I'm also going to include the link to a pregnancy forum that I think you might be interested in joining. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

no need to worry, from what i've read after 12 weeks it's only like a 2% chance, i also read that doctors are going nuts because well meaning women are scaring the beans out of other women and then they go to doctor about everything! just read a lot, that's what i did through both my pregnancies and when in doubt talk to the doc, if he/she says you are doing great, then you are!

Pregnancies can be in the 'risk' zone for up to about 4 months (which is usually why people don't tell family etc until they're about 3-4 months foward in their pregnancy) If you didn't have any trouble conceiving and your family has no history of it, then don't worry about it... it's usually more common in women who have low fertility or trouble with conception.
Don't worry yourself about it... any uneccessary stress isn't good for you or the baby!

Congrats btw =o)

dont worry, it will stress you and the baby out..not good. I know i worried until after 12 weeks. Thats when you're most likely to miscarry. You're pretty much outa the danger zone. But it can happen at almost anytime i believe but its very rare.

You see, what you're going through little boy, is like jello puddin pops. Actually, it's more like Kodak film. See, when I was a boy, we went down slopes. We listened to jazz, but today, they listen to the rap, and get the brain damage. So they don't know what the jazz is all about, you see?
