In the wild, they can live for 30 years. In captivity, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, they can live for several years (as in, 5-10 or more). There are a pair of crabs out there who have been living with their owner for 29 years.

The main reason that they seem to have have such a short lifespan in captivity is because people don't know how to care for them properly. They are low-maintenance, but they are not necessarily "easy" pets. They require specific food, bedding, temperature, and humidity requirements that people simply don't bother to research, so the owners end up killing them.

I had 15 hermit crabs a few years ago. Hermit Crabs live 5-10 years in captivity if taken care of very, very well, and they can live from 15 to 30 years on the beaches! I forgot what website I learned this from, but I found out years ago, too.

IN the wild they can live 50 years and longer! In captivity the oldest that I personally know of is 29 years with that owner. Our oldest crab has been with us for 15 years.. so with the right set-up, tank conditions diet and treatment hermit crabs can live a very very long time.. norlmally when you hear of peoples crabs not living only 2 years or less.. they are not doing something right.
They have very long life spans.
