We in the west are spoonfed lies that Israel is the poor victim defending itself, while we ignore their illegal settlements and human rights violations of Palestinian refugees. It is amazing the double standard we put up with for the sake of Israel. Personally, I think we should give Lebanon as much money, arms and training as we do Israel. Maybe then, Israel would think twice before starting military offensives over practically nothing. We will hear about the 5 casualties in Israel, yet our media will gloss over the thousands of dead civilians in Lebanon.

The abject failure of collective sources to provide comprehensive, accurate information is an abomination. Whose irresponsible & effortless indifference to good journalism leaves most of us ill-equipped to recognize reasonable, workable solutions. A couple of nights ago, as Israel's Army crossed the border, entering Lebanon, one of America's foremost "talking heads" insisted upon the opposite. Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC's Hardball, appearing with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, told viewers the following...
"I spoke with Israel's Foreign Minister Shimon Peres before taping this show. He promised me that Israel would not mount a ground assault against Hezbollah, invading Lebanon with it's infantry & armored vehicles." and, ..."I promise you, Jay, Israel WILL NOT invade Lebanon on the ground!"
Well, either Peres is a liar, the White was pulling strings, (as it is difficult to imagine the White House isn't being briefed by Israel daily), GE told NBC to gag MSNBC, MSNBC told Matthews to lie, Matthews is a liar, or Matthews is an idiot. Take your pick.
For this observer, the public's variously discordant rumblimgs generally arise from utterly limitless incoherance. Caused by so-called reporters, editors, anchors & pundits who decide it's a good time to take a vacation from truth. Or, even when safely embedded in their posts, succumb to rhetoric & spin, & at worst resort to sensationalism. Each so instructed by their corporate masters. So that vesuvian portrayals tend to forward little more than huffishness. Media & government duplicitous in doling out heaping heads full of hubris.
Admittedly, while such may be not altogether unusual, all steadfast sensitivity remains intrinsic to mutually acceptable posibilities. Whether or not cooler heads parlay present & future discourse into an agenda of "peacefull coexistence" is unknowable. Conversely, the immediate results of directional ineptitude lead us down the road to disaster.
Inquiries whose responses - will always fail to achieve a consensus - engender further mistrust, confusion & disharmony. Sadly, the combatants can ill afford the luxury of contentious debate. Under less combustiable environments I would encourage limitless dialog & negotiation. And while I additionally consider the label of WW III, (applied by certain imbecilic individuals), to be exactly that, lest we not soon forget or deny the history of Lebanon, the US, Israel & her enemies.
The last time, Israel invaded Lebanon in an attempt to root out Arafat's PLO. Then US Pres. Ronald Reagan put US troops on the ground in Lebanon. The long term results were disasterous for all parties involved. Once again, little has changed. Tonight, both Israeli & US troops are inside Lebanese borders.
The Marines were dispatched on a supposed peacefull mission to get US citizens out of Lebanon. The answer to your question is that Americans in Israel consider it a "safe haven." They can move freely, under the protection of Israel's military, police & civilian authority. Access to underground shelters guards against attacks. Israel is America's long standing ally, while Lebanon is not. Americans in Lebanon cannot be assured of protection by the Lebanese gov't. or civilian authority. Lebanon is not capable, (as we are seeing), of protecting her own people. Beirut & most of Southern Lebanon is controlled by Hezbollah. Since the removal of Syrian troops, their presence has become even stronger. Americans in Lebanon have reason to fear Hezbollah.
Again, US & other world leaders have failed to bring all sides to the table. Each opposing side views the other with bitter hatred. Conventional armies engage practitioners of Guerilla tactics, leading to a war of attrition. The Arab world interprets Israeli force as criminal aggression, (Israel claims self-defense). Israel's citizens witness murderous acts of terror, (which Islamic Fundamentalists claim is rightful rebellion against occupation). The Lebanese people see their beautiful country torn apart by outsiders. Too many are aghast at America's seeming impotence.
The current situation replicates the past so convincingly, that the only reasonable conclusion is that everyone loses. Everyone. Because ultimately, regardless of the geo-political & socio-economic ramifications for the Iranians, Syrians & other pro-Hamas & Hezbollah supporters on the one side - with the G-8, Israel & all of it's supporters on the other, there is no clear cut victor no matter the outcome.
If Hezbollah, (Syria/Iran), succeeds in driving Israel out of Lebanon for the second time, it does nothing to solve the plight of the Palestinians. Should Israel be militarially successful now, they still have the problem of millions of impoverished Palestinians sitting on their doorstep. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, & Al Qaeda all lay claim to fighting to end the suffering of the Palestinian people. But, history likewise educates us to the fact that their problems will only be solved internally. Never by killing Israelis, or by being killed. Violence, always, ...
begets violence. War, in any and all of its terrible forms, is not the answer. Never.
The solution is political. Of the manner in which Sadat & Begin understood. That only peacefull coexistence will bring a permanent end to the violence. Everything else is merely rhetoric. Hubris.
Thank you for your interest in this vital matter.
