Cream. Sun oil is to aid tanning, and rarely includes an SPF higher than 20. ATM, stores on the SAFE scheme recommend everyone uses factor 25 or higher to defend against heatwave. I'm using factor 40, or 50+. I'm less bothered by the need for a tan than the fear of skin cancer.
IN case you don't know (and apologies if you do...) SPF is the number of times your natural skin protection offered by the cream, so 25 is 25times your natural skin protection. Black skin should use factor 15 minimum, although we currently recommend factor 25, whilst Asian skin should opt for factor 25minimum, and white skin, 25-35. Fair skin or skin that burns easily should use facotr 40 or higher.
Children should be protected with factor 50+.
All sun cream should be reapplied every two hours, or more often when excessively hot or in water.
What used to be called sunblock is now called factor 50+ and blocks as much of the UVA and UVB rays as possible. You will definitely get no tan with this.

Creams have more moisturising effect than oil. Please always use a high SPF. People think that the higher the factor the less tan they will get but its just not true. I use SPF40 on my face and SPF30 on my body always and have a wonderful tan and never any burning. I makes me very cross when I see people with badly burned skin and using only SPF8-15 when its obvious they need much higher protection. Stay out of the intense sun between 12 and 3 and you will keep your tan much much longer. Even short bursts of 10-15 mins a time will give a very good tan over a period of days. Enjoy the sun but please be careful. We only have one skin so we have to look after it. Its too late when we're diagnosed with skin cancer and not able to go out in the sun at all!
Enjoy the summer x

Both work great but the best is Tanning Gelee. Hawaiian Tropic Brand has the Gelee and after being in the sun for an hour I get a tan that usually takes atleast 5 times to get in a tanning bed.
