You ask two different questions. Being an icon and which one a person favors.
Both characters are iconic. Superman's roots are with the gods of myth. Batman harkens back to the heros like Zorro, Robin Hood and the Shadow, persons who play outside of the rules. One stands for authority (Superman-almost a parent figure) one for anarchy (Batman).
That said, for recognizability while Superman has the brighter costume, Batman hits the baby boomers and post baby boomers a little harder thanks to; the 1960's TV Show, the 1990's cartoon and the Tim Burton movies plus Frank Miller's Dark Knight, Superman on the other hand had only Superman I and II in other media.
So I'd say Batman edges Supes out, plus he has all those wonderful toys.

Batman is a HUGE icon, just as big as Superman, for the simple fact that he is just a plain old regular human being. A FILTHY RICH human, but human nonetheless. Most people can easily identify with him. He's rich, but he's humble. And he dons the cape and cowl because of what happened to his parents. I think that's why Batman is so big with the streets, the minorities. Most of us can't relate to Superman (I love him tho, Superman rocks). Superman is more of an ideal to white America. He doesn't get dirty. He doesn't even have a villian that can challenge him seriously. He is all-powerful. He is a model American. Batman, however, can be killed by a stray bullet from some Joe Schmo... and I think people find that to be more... exciting, more dangerous, more realistic. I love 'em both, but Batman will always be the one I hold closer to my heart.

Batman is a an icon like Superman, but his popularity is more stronger to the fans than Superman is. I considered both as icons no matter what.

I think Superman is God like and Batman is a regular guy. Their appeal is different, but they are both icons. I would say Batman has more loyal fans. It's like pro wrestling. Superman is Hulk Hogan. He is generally more well-known, but doesn't have deep support from the fans. The Batman fans are like Ric Flair. Our appreciate goes deep and we are very loyal.

He goes head to head with him, don't you remember that show from the late 90's I think it was called The adventures of Superman and Batman or something like that it was my favorite show because two of the first and best superheroes were working together.I think that's a good question and I think he is as big as Superman.
