Wow, you're getting some strange answers. Based on experience of playing both the sax and clarinet, I can tell you not to use Rico. I get the worst sound out of those. Vandoren is the next best brand, and I usually use those because they are sold in most places. But I try to use Mitchell Lurie as much as I can. They give me a deep, clear sound that I have trouble getting with other brands. This is mostly for the clarinet, but I have had the same results with a sax. Hope this helps!

This is a personal choice more than anything. Some people swear by Selmer because in the 60s they made the Mark VI, which is considered the stradavarius of saxophones. A private lesson teacher in the town where i went to high school swears by Yanigasawa. I have a pro Yamaha that I love, but I have a Selmer Bundy II and an 80 year old Conn that are good for their own merits. It all depends on the player and the instrument. I use my old Conn for sax ballads, I use the Yamaha for big band jazz where I need tone and mass amounts of volume. Go try different horns, there are tons out there.
Here is a list of some of the most popular saxophone manufacturers and their website. Investigate, and play them for yourself. You may be surprised by some off-brand, 20 year old sax that is perfect for you and no one else.

Reeds are the same way, I know most places carry Rico reeds, and others carry Vandoren. I've been using Woodwind reeds from www.wwbw.com and they are great too. Just keep trying to find what works with you.

I have played sax for many years and I prefer the old Yamaha jazz sax's like the ones from the '40s I think that they produce the best sound with a #1 reed.

Vandoren or Rico. I personally use Rico, but my high school band director always recommended Vandoren.
