I've been wondering if the internet aids or impedes the feeling of being alone inside us. Just looking for opinions. Not really a question that can ultimately be answered, right?

Both, I think. For example, right now I'm wasting time online when I could be holding a friendly conversation with my coworkers. However, I feel very uncomfortable in social situations. I find it difficult to make friends, and chatting online is a relatively stress-free option. I have met several people online, and would consider them friends. However, I have no intention of traveling to Denmark or Australia to meet them. I don't believe that I have the same kind of connection with them as I do with the girl I've been friends with since I was 16. Maybe the internet broadens our horizons, but not in the same way as real face-to-face interactions with people. It's hard to say, I guess.

this reminds me of that scene in the movie "Contact" where matthew mcconaughy (god help my spelling) is being interviewed by larry king...

also this thing i heard on the radio the other day, where the guy said people have fewer friends today than ever before in history. apparently only 25% of people reported that they have good friends to talk to....

i think the answer is both, but ultimately the internet leaves us more isolated, since experience it it alone (without that in-person contact).

GOOD QUESTION!!! I think the keyword is human. I think we lose human connection on the internet. But we are making some type of connection, right?

I would say both. Find human connection and lose it. Like a ballance of conecting with the real world.

well, i think it does both.. but if u were addicted to it & u know 7 or 8 hrs in front of the screen everyday.. u're cutting out ur real social contact with the real ppl around... it's a nice way of communication when it's NOT too much !

the internet takes us to places we never been before. if you feel alone inside dont blame the internet, blame yourself, for having no life, but the internet.

Two sides to every coin. I think it does connect us mentally, such as Answers or chat etc. but for sure physically it disconnects us.
