The Field Museum is awesome and has some great new exhibits as well as some classic ones (like Sue the T-Rex).
Next door is the Shedd aquarium with a view of the lake and really awesome aquariums. Ive been to many aquariums around the country and this is definately one of the best.
Lincoln Park Zoo is free and great for kids. They have polar bears (my fave) and a petting zoo area.
The Museum of Science and Industry has been here since the World Fair and is also great for kids. It has an IMAX theater, a realistic coal mine (a must see), and a huge Fairy Castle dollhouse (my favorite thing in the museum).
In Navy Pier there is a museum for kids but the name escapes me now. I went there when I was little and it was in a different location and I wish I was still young enough to play in there because there is nothing like it! It is so interactive and fun!
For the adults, the Art Institute is great and has some awesome pieces.
Make sure to take the free trolley around the city. It takes you to all the museums and the zoo, along the lakefront, and to some great shopping.

Go to Navy Pier (there is a hands-on children's museum--I took my daycare class of 2yrs and 3 yrs old--They loved it!) Also navy Pier has the Ferris Wheel and many other attractions including an IMAX theater to suite your needs for you two to enjoy and your daughter!!! Lincoln Park Zoo is also near. This is one of the last free zoos in the country, its fun! You can also go to one of the many beaches, If you like to play volleyball and/or watch go to North Ave.Beach! In addition, bring a stroller and stroll Michigan Ave and State Street!! Many shops and restaurants!! ALSO, there are so many museums, the 2 that I remember most as a child are the Shedd Aquaruim (LOVE IT--might be better for a two year old) and the Museum of Science and Industry!

There are so many things to do, you will have trouble picking. I would suggest that you consider the Kohls Children Museum in Wilmette. Your GF's 2 year old should love it.

Also, go to the Crown fountains at Millennium Park. they are fun for everyone.
