it might be a dead hooker behind the fridge.

do you have a garbage disposal? Those can get really smelly. Get a lemon cut it in half put it in and turn it on. That should help. You might also pull the drawer thing out of the stove on the bottom make sure there is nothing funky there or under your sink. If that doesn't work smell for clues...For example does it only smell during certain times of the day or only when it is hot out side. Then the last thing look for potential water leaks..Sniff the carpet and the floors in your kitchen and bath. If I had more clues I could possibly help more. Oh one last thing double check your frig inside, under and behind.

You might be having the same problem I am having in my kitchen. Do you have a garbage disposal and a dish washer? If so, it may be that your garbage disposal is clogged and/or leaking through the dish washer. That's what mine is doing. I'm trying to get it fixed now. I don't even use my dish washer. Look in your dish washer. If there's some unexplained water, especially if it's brown, that could be what's going on...and it would definitely explain the smell. Old food and gunk mixed with water...definitely not nose-friendly. Check it out. I could be wrong, but it sounds a lot like it. Hope this helps.

Could be your garbage disposal -- get a lemon, peel it and send the good stuff down the drain - maybe a couple of them. Or it could be something behind the fridge. I think you are really asking a serious question here so I'm ansewring serious. I HATE it when odd smells pop up. Check your fridge too for something you may have missed as if there is something bad in there, you may only smell when the door opens and closes. One more thing, a pipe could have been leaking someplace and it could be getting moldy. Check under the sink too.

I think it's the drain in the kitchen sink, I have the same problem, try pouring either one of the following down the sink like once a week:
Either vinager
Lemon juice
or Clorox from the clrox spray
It could be the wood from the cabinets, if it's old enough it would smell, the only solution would be to change it to new...
check out your oven too, and the floor if it is vinyle tiles....if there is any sort of leak....

It could be your plumbing is backed up in your walls. Flush the drains with clorox or draino and see if it goes away. You might have a leak somewhere. If you do then clearing the clog may lessen it or make it worse. Either way you will learn what the smell is.
It could also be a Golgothan sh*t demon there to advertise the upconing "Clerks 2" movie. You never know.
Enjoy and buy some air freshioner.

could be coming out of your drain hole, try pouring some bleach down it. Are your neighbors cooking meth?
there is also a drip pan under your refrigerator (probably) these fill up with rotten crap from your refrigerator, and get really ripe, sometimes. If there is no pan, pull out the fridge and check the floor underneath , it could be running right onto the floor.

can you describe the smell?
if you have gas, could be a gas leak: use soapy water in a squirt bottle and spray on gas lines. If it bubbles, that is where the leak is.
if you have a garbage disposal: Pour pinesol or another strong smelling cleaner in it to get rid of the smell.

I cant smell it but if it has been there for a while and you have a gas stove or other appliance it could be a gas leak, and you should have someone check it out. It could also be methane which is associated with the sewer and drainage system, which should also be checked out.

Maybe it's some dirty, smelly guy in the apartment under you! Yuck!!
Or, since it's coming from the kitchen, it could be a dirty garbage disposal or sink drain.

Check behind the refrigerator. Move it away from the wall (carefully). Leave for a couple of hours and then come back...check behind there right away before inhaling anywhere else.
