The extension to a house is sometimes a 'conservatory'. Why is it called so ?

I conservatory is a rounded glass extension that people use for plants and flowers. My aunt just built one onto her house and there is something about the side of the house that its built on for the most sunlight which in turn, changes the humidity for the plants. Most of the time if the room isn't rounded with glass on all sides and ceiling, except the main house side, it is a sun-room. Also, the roof is supposed to have a pointed ceiling for the humidity control.

Now I could be sooo wrong about this, but I think that I'm right. If not, sorry!!!

Small addition to what "brittme" says:
A conservatory can also conserve an art form.
For example a Music High School is also called a conservatory.
