Believe it or not, I just had my dog put to sleep last week. We had her creamated. The vet, who is a very good friend of mine for years, is bringing the ashes to me tonight. We are going to bury them!! I loved Buffy (the dog) with all my heart, but I just can't imagine looking at a box full of her ashes every day in my house. The thoughts of her when she was alive are hard enough!
EDIT: Well, I now have Buffy's ashes, and I have made the decision to keep them with me. I decided I'd rather have her in the beautiful little urn in the house than buried outside. I know it sounds crazy, but somehow, just looking at that urn, I feel she is right here with me!!

Not only would I, but I have cremated two of my pets. There ashes are in special boxes (urns) and have a place of honor in our home. They were members of our family and one day will be buried with us....hopefully many, many, many years from now. A friend of ours had his dog cremated and spread his ashes over a field they hunted in.

Where I live vets will take/send your dead pet to the dump unless you have them cremated. I couldn't let that happen, and although I'm not as fanatical as some of the people who've answered you, I did have her cremated. She's buried in my garden next to 2 of my daughter's cats. There is a pet cemetary I could have taken her ashes to, but this way she's near to us, and the yard she used to play in.

After my beloved Chip the Cat lost his battle with GI Lymphoma, I had him cremated. His ashes are in a beautiful antique, locked box and he will be buried with my ashes when it is my time; this is in my will. I couldn't bear the thought of his little body rotting in the ground.

Cremating's the way to go in my opinion. If you're into that sort of thing, you can keep the ashes in a decorative container of some sort, or bury them, or scatter them outside somewhere....

When I lived in the bush I just buried them nearby, but when I moved to the city I decided cremation was the way to go. A small portion of the cremains of my last dog are kept in a little urn, the rest are buried under a big redwood tree.

We did that once and the vet told us that the ashes had to be taken to a pet cemetary or she would dispose of them. From what she was telling us there are laws about scattering ashes, human or animal.

We had our dog cremated when she died a couple of years ago. We have her ashes in a beautiful cedar box on our mantle.

If you decide to cremate your pet's remains you could keep it in an urn or scatter it outside at your pet's favorite spot!
This way you can move on and your pet is where he/she always loved to be!

Well, my buddy's mother in law who I lived with for a while cremated her dog Chester when he died of liver failure. She put his ashes on her mantle.
