the legend, John Henry is about a man who was in a contest to see if he could work faster than a machine. He was a railroad man. Some people think he really existed and the 'contest' actually took place.

That's an old folksong; that means that it was probably sung by a lot of people before someone recorded it. Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger did versions, but I'd go with Leadbelly's version. It's on an album called Bourgeois Blues. It's available through iTunes.

Not necessarily the first version of a song about John Henry's legend, but definitely the best one!!
