Getting things out of the sink trap isn't that hard. Under the sink there is a bend in the pipe (known as the 'P' trap for it's shape) There is usually a compression fitting on either side. Just undo the fitting on either side and you will probably find the ring caught inside the little elbow joint. You might get a little water on you, but it's not like you have to put you hands in a wad of s*it or anything.

Most sinks, the trap can be unscrewed at both ends and removed. Then just flush the stuff into a bucket, picj through, and find the ring. Remember to put the trap back _before_ you use the sink to wash the ring and your hands.
Failing that, if you're so concerned, put some rubber gloves on first.

Get a pipe wrench and take the trap off from the bottom. If you dig, from the top -you risk pushing it all the way through where it will be virtually impossible to recover.
