I'm still wondering why anyone is prejudiced against other races in the first place. Sounds pretty silly to me, to hate on someone because their skin is a different color than yours. Surely, there are more important things we can hate on one another for than THAT!!
Here's another question...why is it the black people around here are all afraid of my cat? I mean, he's black, too! He has discovered that a black person is very unlucky, and he has become very careful about letting them cross his path... Took him six weeks to heal after the last experience.

So you have some statistics to back up your claim that white people who are prejudiced get tanned? Or white people who are not prejudiced don't get tanned?Or that whoever "they" is hate everything about black people, but tanning.
Do you have any idea how dumb that sounds? Do you understand that you encourage prejudice by making sweeping general statements that don't have any foundation? Why not try to encourage all of us getting along? Make Martin proud of you.
To answer your question:
Most white people get tan -prejudiced ones and the unprejudiced ones, because it is in style. Years ago, it was considered high class to be very pale--to be untouched by the sun-very unlike the poor blacks and whites and browns who had to work outside. This was a very prejudiced atttude--not wanting to look like any poor person. To9 look like you never worked.
Then sometime in the 50's--about the time the bikini was introduced to the world, it became a fad to want to be tan all over-
to show that all you had to do all day is lay around in the sun at the pool--another class thing--not color at all.
The only time it got to be a color thing is if the tans got really dark and then white people would make fun of a white person who must have some black genes somewhere. That is a color prejudice that some white/black/brown/yellow/red people all share- those who tan and people who don't
Again, that is a color thing, for people of all colors who think color matters for some reason.
I am a fairly white person. I never answer color questions because I have no way of knowing my history. I don't tolerate any racial remarks from anyone, including you,
I think color doesn't matter nearly as much as most blacks and white act like it does. Culture, education, character, willingness to learn, tolerance of others, that is what matters.
My advice: Quit making excuses and make the world better. What you love really does matter!

I think the racial tensions and prejudice are a little deeper than just a hatred for the color of your skin. It may stem more from the events and actions of the past dating back to the early days of slavery. I'm neither black nor am I white so I can more than confidently say I'm not giving a biased opinion here. I know I tan, and the reason is not to be more like any one race. It is more of a cosmetic demand rather than anything racial. As I said I am not biased and picking sides on a long-fueled fire that burns across race lines, but this question is proof itself of the ignorance of the racists on both sides of the fight constantly picking at one another rather than working toward peace. Because the mentality of these racists is, of course, "all white people hate everything about black people, and all black people hate everything about white people," which I can solemnly say is out of ignorance.

I'm white and hate tans. (i'm not prejudice though)
White people can't handle tans well without getting wrinkles at an early age and getting cancers.
Whoever said it was good to tan was wrong. Only 5 minutes a day of casual sunlight is enough for vitamin D. And thats only if you dont get enough of that Vitamin in your diet.
Just incase you find it interesting. White people adapted from black people a long time ago. The human race started in the heart of Africa. People setteled in northern Europe where sun was scare and the heavy melanin prevented people from getting enough vitamin D. So gradually over the generations our skin lost melanin making us lighter and lighter.

I can't resist...I see your point here in asking this question...it is a valid one. I think where you are going is why are some white people hypocritical...they try and tan, thus increasing the amount of melanin in their skin, which is biologically like someone who already has more...a black person.
I have not an answer to that other than prejudice often is bred out of fear and ignorance...just look at some of these answers!
FYI to the person who taunted you...the sun emits rays...not omits..omit means leave out, exclude...emit is gives off.
And...everyone gets vitamin D from the sun, not just white people. Tanning is not better for white people than anyone else...in fact the fairer your skin..the more apt you are to burn. Excessive burning leads to skin cancer and wrinkles. LOL on YOU!

Come now, my child. Not every white person hates every black person. You're making a large leap here and it doesn't work. In fact, you are ADDING to the hate by making your assumption. As for the tanning thing, even though I am Caucasian I tan because I go outside, not because I lay in the sun toasting myself. My skin is not "white" but a darker peachy gold that darkens every year to a soft brown. That's because of genetics. Quit adding to the hate around you.

The desire for a tan by white people is no different than black women wanting straight hair. It has nothing to do with wanting to be another race, per se; it's all about appearances. There are some whites who like a nice bronze tone; there are some who are completely happy with being pale. This is akin to black women who prefer to get extensions or use flat irons to straighten their hair while there are those black women who prefer to keep their hair natural.
I understand why you asked this question, but if you really think about it, wanting to be like another race has little bearing in what people decide to do with themselves--outside of those who are completely brainwashed and have self-hatred (i.e. Asian girls who get the eyelid surgery, Haitian girls who use whitening cream, white girls who get black girl perms and weave styles).

Having an even color in ones epidermis is a sign of healthiness, not a envy. For the women of white men its a status symbol,a subtle statment that they are taken care of so well that they can just lay in the sun. For white men themselves its a sign of ruggedness and vitality. For all the races who think they can't tan, wear sunglasses all day in the sun and then laugh at your raccoon appearance.

First, you make the assuption that white people are prejudice. They are not. Second, not all white people shake and bake their skin. I don't. And third, many white people envy black people that they have a year round nice dark shade to their skin. Especially on your butts. We hate our white butts, lol.

I agree with you on that. I do not see the sense in changing your natural skin color. If god intended for it to be different you wouldn't have that color in the first place. Besides all black people's skin comes in different shades just like white peoples, mexican, asian etc.
