My wife and I were both raised in Orange County, CA. We now have 3 small children and are looking for a change of pace/better value society to raise a family. We like outdoor activities with the family, so that is why we are looking at Fort Collins. Our favorite activites are off-road motorcycles, PWC/boats, camping, and going to the park with the kids. Any comments on these activities in this area?

My biggest concern is that we will miss all the options that we have in So Cal (proximity to Vegas, San Diego, world-class beaches, Lake Havasu). Will it be too drastic of a change?

If you have firt hand experience of Orange County and Fort Collins area, I'd especially like to hear your comments. Thanks!

There is an off-road track just south of Fort Collins and lots of other places to ride. For boating, we have Horsetooth Resivour, Carter Lake, and Boyd lake all within 15 miles of Fort Collins. Camping and out-door activities are a major draw for any place in Colo., Fort Collins is just a few miles from the Rocky Mountains. My neighbors moved here from Oakland area 15 years ago and love it here. The Fort Collins area is a great place to raise your kids.

You did see this week that CNN/Money Magazine voted Fort Collins as the number one place to live in the country, right? Not that it means it's perfect, but for things like the recreational activities you mentioned, you couldn't find a better place! The quality of life is outstanding! The cost of living will be so much lower than in California and the weather is really the best I've ever experienced anywhere in the country. It's not a long drive to the Denver airport to get to Vegas or San Diego, if you must go there. I've not lived in Orange County, but in my visits there, all I can picture is congestion and row after row of cookie-cutter houses. You should come see for yourself before you uproot your family, but it's worth a look, for sure! Good luck!

I have lived in Kentucky my entire life so I can't speak on living in these areas. Matter of fact, I've never even been to California, but I go to Colorado every four years. I love Colorado!! The Fort Collins area seems very nice. I am actually thinking of relocating there myself, maybe to attend graduate school at Colorado State. Anyway, the Rocky Mountains feel more like home to me than any place I've ever been. The fresh air and the mountains are so invigorating. Much different than I would expect of So Cal (even though I'm sure its beautiful too). Absolutely a beautiful place to be.

I LOVE Lake Havasu....but I was raised around Fort Collins for awhile and I have to say I like it a little bit more. I think it's definatly a better place to raise the kids.

The winters are not so undesirable right here...I hardly positioned on my iciness jacket. at present it truly is snowing, yet day after today it meant to be fifty 5....70 by using Saturday.
