Most common house phone cords have 2 twisted wire pairs (RJ-14). Switch the wire pairs and you have the numbers switched. Or join them and you've joined the lines. Split them and you've split the lines.

If you need to find out which line is which just go to your phone box on your house and look at the customer access panel, you should be able to see what colour cable leads to which line.

Remeber to note the transmit and receive designations on each line and to not switch them.

There's a page with a chart below to help you.
T = Transmit
R = Receive

It depends on how the two lines are setup.
If they both ring to the same phone (single line phone), and one ring sounds different than the other, then one is what's called a teen ring, or alternate ring. If that is the case, then they can not be split.
If you have two seperate lines that come into one "two line" phone, then you either have two cords going to your phone, or one cord that is using two pairs.
If it is one cord using two pairs, then you can remove the jack from the wall and wire in a dual jack.
To wire a dual jack:
Wire the first pair of wires (usually red/green or blue/white) to the red/green posts of the first jack.
Wire the second pair of wires to the red/green posts on the second jack.

What you need to do is get another phone, I have a phone that I can set up 3 different numbers and leave messages for all three.
You need a vtech phone, you can change the rings for each line.

t 2451 is the one that I have and then I got a phone with a telezapper from the same company. No more telemarketers.
