It is pretty antequated language. Not many people here probably remember how hard it was to type with it and have to be very careful with using liquid paper (on more than one sheet of paper) and then letting it dry a few minutes before resuming typing. Not many people here remember the smell of fresh purple dittos either. Man, I am old.
You know, we forget how lucky we are to live in a world of spell check and now grammar check. I mean, had I had that in college I think I would have done a whole lot better.
So being a "change agent" in my past career, I will have suggest to change something like this we need to have two things--make it affordable and create buy-in.
I will make it affordable...So yahoo, AOL, and MS and everybody else doesn't have to reformat let's say it's a "cyber copy." (I thought computer copy buy given the text messenging and the Blackberry's).
Now all we have to do is change the language of all the people who use it. Some how get the word out there that cc is CYBER COPY. Educate the young, put it in the news, slide it into cocktail conversations, make it hip language at the water cooler. It may take time, but it could work.

I think it is funny. Most of the people I work with have no idea of the origins of cc. They wouldn't know what carbon paper was if they saw it.

No, why would it be funny? There is a difference between sending an email directly to someone & copying them on it. Sending it directly to them implies they need to follow-up on it. Sending a "cc" indicates that it for information only or for approval only.
I wish that I got tickled so easily.

Just as funny as ships setting sail, yet have no sails. There are oodles of expressions like that, that are holdovers from when the usage was different.
How about 'hold your horses', or 'here is mud in your eye' or 'that was a flash in the pan' or....

hell I bet half the people on here don't even know what a "real" carbon copy is. wouldn't be able to tell you how to make one, and know what they were originally used for. so i do find it slightly amusing.

Seems somewhat humerous but what else could you possibly call it that would be universally understood?
