Baptism, is the sacrament, whereby a person is dipped in water to signify a new birth in Christianity.

A Christening is where the child is named, and is usually a part of the baptism when baptisms are done.

Chrismation, is another sacrament, some churches perform at Baptism, and others later on, and involves an oil known as the Holy Chrism, where the child is given the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Different Christian denominations have differing opinions on what sort of understanding a person should have of these Sacraments before taking part in them, and so some religions don't baptize or Chrismate children, but almost all will Christen them.

If you are catholic--a baptism is where a child is welcomed into the family of Christ. The child is dunked in water, or has water poured over their head (depends on the church and the parents' wishes). A Christening is what they call the welcoming of a child in other religions. They don't do the whole dunking of water things. Baptism in other faiths is usually when a person is old enough to make their own decision if they want to accept Jesus i Christ as their Lord and Savior into their life. Baptisms are where they are dunked in water. Catholics have confirmation where they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit--and they make the decision to accept Jesus into their lives. Depending on which christian faith you are talking about, the words mean different things. :)

As a Baptist my understanding is Baptism involves complete immersion in water, Christening is just sprinkling water.
Baptists believe the act itself is symbolic and does not provide salvation, believing in Christ as savior is what cleanses sin, baptism is an outward symbol of a new life in Christ.

christening - a ceremony in a Christian church in which somebody, especially a baby, is baptized and usually given a Christian name or names

baptism - a religious ceremony in which somebody is sprinkled with or immersed in water to symbolize purification. In Christian baptisms, the person is often named and accepted into the Christian faith.

in roman catholic faith - they call it baptism when they baptized a baby

in other christian faith - they call it christening if they baptized a baby and true baptism happens when you are old enough to accept the faith and they do the immersion in the water which is a symbol of purification

They are actually very different.

Catholics believe that being baptized has to be done or you won't go to heaven so they baptize or "christen" their babies. I also believe that they give the child their formal name at this time. . .as I am not Catholic, I am not completely sure.

However, other Christians believe that you have to be old enough to make the conscience decision to become a child of god so they do not believe in baptizing babies. . . they wait until the child or adult makes the decision their-selves and then they are baptized.

They are not the same thing....

Baptism is when you decide to accept "the savior" into your life. This is a form of washing you clean

Christemining is for a new baby. It is similar b/c the man/womab of God prays over the child. Anointing the child for lifelong blessing.
