Is it bad for your computer/lap tap to turn it off every night before going to bed and then turning it back on again in 8 hours on a daily basis? Or is it better to just put it on Stand by mode when you're going to turn it on again later anyway in eight hours or so?! It's like best to turn of your car engine to save gas when you're gonna be more than a few minutes waiting sort of thing?! lol :))

No, it won't hurt anything. It may actually prolong the life of your hardware.

It depends on a few factors. If you are concerned about power, then it is good to turn it off. If you are concerned about the life of the computer, a few factors are involved. Firstly, if you use the computer 8 hours a day, and run various maintenance tasks on it automatically at night, then you should leave it on. If you only use it a bit, though, it is better to turn it off when you are not using it. The thermanl strain and other things are minimal, and you gain component life through less use and less thermal damage. Happy computing!

Computers can be compared to cars only in certain ways.
The jury is out on that one. Restarting can free up latent pieces of programs stored in memory, and Micro$oft might never make a version of Windows that manages that properly. It costs about 25 cents a day to leave a computer on all the time.
If you have an old/failing hard drive, then you definitely want to leave it on, because like a car, cold-starting a hard drive is one of the worst things for it.
But, as I said, the jury is out on which is better. It's not a big deal either way,.......especially if you do proper backups.

I've been turning my computer off every night for years, and I've kept computers running so long that my computer guy is astonished that I've got one that still works.

If it were just a few minutes, that would be one thing, but to shut it down for hours, that gives it time to cool off and will reduce the chance of a power surge or outage frying it while you're not awake to know to shut it down.

I don't think its BAD. In fact, it is good to reboot your machine periodically (e.g. every day or few days if you leave it in standby).
The reboot reloads everything in memory again. If you don't shutdown, it appears that some things stay in memory. Just seems that a fresh boot of everything is a good thing. Besides, many times when updates occur, you must reboot.

MTBF on things these days is really good. I wouldn't worry about it.

About the only thing you really get out of NOT shutting down is the wait when you boot up (I assume you have Windows type of machine).

Technically it wont hurt the battery at all. It may drain it a little quicker than normal but shouldnt hurt anything. The problem if you leave it running is that it can possibly overheat if left on the charger overnight. Also if left on carpet take it off because it can cause static and totally trash your computer.

turn off before bed is the best than stand by because the computer will get complete rest for 8 hrs.

A laptop is built for short term use (office work, waiting on a train, at school, ect.), and its fans and heat sinks will fail to protect equipment after it has been on for an extended period of time (>8 hours). I'm not sure about desktops.

DH, the computer programmer, gets on my case whenever I don't turned it off, especially at night, so I'd have to say no, it isn't.
