At school it seems that they teach you everything except how to get a job. The only work I've gotten so far is painting on motorcycles and cars. Any suggestions on where to start looking for higher paying jobs on the web or where ever. I'm having hardly any luck at all on my own. I welcome any ideas of any kind.

Broaden your skill base. There are very few professionals who just illustrate. Learn some online and offline design skills, work for a design company for a while and they will probably appreciate and use your illustration skills.

If you insist on going freelance, do a business startup or business management course. You're currently qualified only as an illustrator and need experience in accounts, marketing & PR, project management and customer relations. That's most of what being freelance is about... and occasionally you do work and get paid ;)

This may not be quite up your alley, but check out http://www.gnsi.org/ , the home site of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. I'm getting a degree in Scientific Illustration, but if you're into anything remotely artistic, signing up for their listserv is very helpful. Tons of hints about jobs, workshops, techniques, and they're very friendly on the listserv about answering questions you have. (I wouldn't go on there begging for a job, but they're sure to have helpful advice about the next step to take). Good luck!

What does a freelance illustrator do? Draw for clients? I have never known anybody who needed such a person.

Good luck with that.
