This could be a very wide range question. Why I say this is because it all depends on the generation you grew up in and also your educational background. People that were in their 20's in the 1950's were in a very conservative period and peoples social attitude was less tolerant. Of course you had rebels , the James Deans and the Elvis Presley's. You look at old Frankie Avelon and Annette Funicello flicks ---Beach Blanket Bingo --this was the beginning of a young hip generation ---which now is very tame and simple. Every generation pushes the envelope further and further. The media picks up on things and circulate popular ideas of the time. Like the Beatles in the 1960's had --uh--long hair and was not proper to social standards, but the media ran with it and later mini skirts and long, long hair hippies was the norm for the time and cussing in public was becoming more common. Lets jump ahead to the 90's and Rap was the new attitude and dressing in "gangsta style" was hip.some of the younger generations have been numbed to WHAT IS politically correct any longer. It will take a situation like this ---Yahoo -Answers & Questions to be around for a while for people that WANT to be educated and relearn what is socially acceptable. When people do not know how to interact in a polite way then they of course will continue to be naively rude. I grew up in the Beatles era and saw a lot of change in our worlds social structure. So I always try to first---weigh my reactions to situations before I make a possible era in judgment. If I should happen to find out I made a mistake in judgment, of course I will excuse myself. This is how I was raised. The hardest example I believe is when you have a situation that involves emotions and romance--for instance ---your lover --your spouse --and you have had a large disagreement and feel your own opinion is THE right one. Then---it would be difficult to say your sorry. But then we do have relationship counselors.

In my youth it wasn't something I said a lot. My pride would always get in the way of that. As I got older and wiser I realized that it felt good to be honest with myself and others, to readily admit when I was wrong. It was actually a freeing experience. People also respected me more for showing that vulnerability. I made a practice of doing that with my daughter and it has given us a bond that I think would not be there if I was blinded by false pride. It's way to difficult and stressful to be sitting up there on the pedestal and supposedly knowing all the answers and never being wrong. I am a woman and 49.

It depends of course. If I have my Irish up then I'd rather eat rocks! I take my stance and would rather die, it's in me. If I really feel that it can do some good and I want to move forward with the person I'm at odds with then sure, I cave in; life's too short. I don't like it though. Oh yes, the gender and age thing; I'm a forty five year old man; and I'll not be apologizing for that to anyone.

no I don't - but I do have a hard time not saying them just to cover up my social phobia - in other words - I can take the blame for things that are not my doing

44/m - it is hard for the Guys to say it - but the Gals usually have no problem with it. I had to work on it - and now it is much easier.
