The proper way to connect "jumper cables" is first, make sure the vehicles are NOT touching each other (could cause an unwanted ground connection). Then , with the "good" car idling, connect the RED clamps on the cables to the Positive battery terminals. Then connect the Black clamp to the "good" battery NEGATIVE terminal, and then connect the other BLACK clamp to a ground on the "dead" vehicle, NOT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL! This could cause a battery explosion! Some vehicles have a special terminal to connect to that is marked "Connect booster cable ground here". If the vehicle doesn't have this, connect to an engine bracket, the engine block, basically any unpainted metal surface where the clamp will grab in good shape. This is the safest way to "boost" a vehicle. Remove the cables in the reverse order they were attached. Also, don't let any of the cable ends touch while connecting and disconnecting the cables. I have seen a battery explode before, and believe me, you don't want to be around if yours does! HTH!!

Turn the car off and put the red on the positive side and black on the negative side for both cars and then turn on the car that will start and let it run for about 5-10 minutes then try starting the other car. If its the battery, then the car should start. If its the alternator or starter, it won't start.
I would also take your car to a auto parts store or any other place that sales and/or installs batteries, and have them check the battery for how much juice is left or when it is time to replace it. Usually that is done for free or for just a few dollars.
If I'm right, then I'm a girl! If I'm wrong, then I'm a boy!! No, I am really a woman and I think that I'm right about the process, but I would check out the manual for the car to be 100% right. My car manual has a diagram on how to hook them up and the right process for the jump.

On the car with the dead battery, attache the red cable to the positive post on the battery and the black cable to any good ground on the car not the battery. on the car you are using to get the jump from the red cable goes on the positive post and the black goes on the negative post.
the reason you don't attach the black to the battery on the car with the dead battery is you don't want run the current trough the battery, if you hook it up as I describe the current will go straight to the starter, and once you get your car started the alternator will charge the dead battery.
most jumper cables come with instructions.
hope this helps you

What lugnutz59 says (best answer).
I'll just add that you want to remove the cables in the reverse order that you attached them. I'm also a major paro so I actually blow air over the batteries (yes, i inhale away from the car and pretend the battery is a birthday cake (while wearing safety goggles). Everyone will say I'm crazy, do I actually think I'm blowing away the hydrogen. Yes, I do!

First you want to connect the negative terminals (so you protect the computer from a voltage spike) . Then attach to the positive on the dead battery first, then to the car you are using to jumpstart. Then try to start the dead car, ir it doesn't start right away let it sit with the other car running for a few minutes and try again. As soon as the dead car starts disconnect in the reverse order as quickly as possible.

First.... both vehicles have to be off... and yes, this does include the one that is "getting jumped off". Black to Black connections... then Red to Red... THEN... turn on the "good" vehicle.... Don't turn on the "bad" vehicle for alittle while so the charge can be good and ready to starter up.

match the colors, red to red and black to black! Dont do it the other way or you can kill yourself or see a really big spark jump out at you.

+ to + and - to - on the dead battery... + to + on the live one, but hook the - to the alternator bracket so you don't cause a spark and blow your battery up in your face.
