It would be lovely if it was a plot to make Secretary Rumsfeld rich. Unfortunately it's not.

Hundreds of millions of birds in 52 countries have died from H5N1 avian influenza or have been destroyed because of the disease.

Over 50% of the people who have contracted the disease have died. Most of these people got the disease from birds, but there have been several clusters with limited human-to-human transmission.

What we are really worried about is that as the disease continues to mutate if it becomes easily spread from person to person, we will have a pandemic.

We have no immunity to this virus. There is no vaccine. We can't even begin to produce a vaccine until the virus mutates - it will take at least 6 months to produce a vaccine after that.

Antiviral drugs (like Tamiflu) might not be terribly useful, they don't cure the disease-just reduce the symptoms-if they work. There won't be enough antivirals for even 1% of our population.

But the Department of Defense is not the paramount champion of the bird flu story. We are not even the country of origin. The story migrated (pardon) via reports, fears and the media in other countries. I have seen disinterested doctors and other observers interviewed; they were screaming, proverbially, at the top of their lungs that this threat must command attention. Are they in on your conspiracy too.

You give our government too much credit. Yes, employees of the federal government often end up making a lot of money. Yes, correlations can be alleged between positions of power and an ability to earn, but your critique is intellectually lazy at best.

It is important to be vigilant against self-serving practices by our leaders, but there are better ones to criticize than this.

They probably made bird flu in the first place on plum island. Then they sell the cure for a premium.

Amazing how much this current regime is tied into anything that they can make money off of government contracts. No bid contracts for Cheney's company and who knows what bush has his fingers in but I'm sure it involves crap loads of money. Who said that politicians aren't in it for the money.
