The truth is not always advantageous and we end in manipulating the truth. When it comes to haunt in one form or another, we lack the courage to face it. It is all one's own fault, if we do not want to face truth either as an intelligent choice or as a moral courage but only as a last resort when we have run out of all our options.

Truth hurts... sure!

The truth turns the reality against you and force you to face it. The truth makes you feel ashamed about yourself, the truth freezes you because when the truth is exposed, there is no way out but to accept it and move on.

The truth does not supposed to hurt that much. It helps you learn and gain experience. Why is the truth such a bitter pill to swallow? It's because sometimes, the reality is so cruel, people do not want to learn from it. It's easier to live an ignorant life. But then the choice is between do what is right and do what is easy. Your choice.

Seems like we all have our minds made up with what we perceive as the truth according to our knowledge and prejudices. Then when the real truth is revealed to us it is so contrary to our opinion that we rebel against it.

Sometimes the truth hurts, but if we learn to analyse our perceived truth with the actual truth we see the fallacy in our thinking. Of course there will always be those who cannot accept it and insist they are right no matter what the facts are.

It is bitter only if you have been conditioned to believe a lot of c**p, and you are too lazy to think things out for yourself. Now anything that disagrees with your belief system, will feel bitter.
Life food, you got to chew the stuff yourself, not get prechewed goop.
Once you have thought things out for yourself, truth will be sweet.
Question is, are you willing to make the effort?

I think it's pretty much because the truth is generally the exact opposite of what people want to hear.

But not always. Finding out that your girlfriend has been cheating on you...Bitter.

Finding out that she has been planning you a special birthday bash party, sweet and yummy. Unless you suspected her of cheating, then you feel guilty and its bitter.

Huh, I guess it's because we are conditioned to love few people, trust no one and ignore evidence that goes contrary to our beliefs.

The only way out? Smoke pot.

We are excellent at inventing rationale to suit whatever lie we might be trying to tell ourselves ("Women are SUPPOSED to have this many curves," "I didn't need her as a friend anyway!" "I had every right to ask her to give up her grandmother's funeral. After all, it's MY wedding day!" etc.)

To hear the truth means that other people don't agree with our rationale. That invalidates our comfy justification...and pisses us off!
