I'm pregnant with my second child and I'm wondering if I should breastfeed or not. I couldn't with my first because of depression, but I really want to with this one, my only problem is when he is born I have to get major work done on my teeth that is going to require alot of meds. So should I or shouldn't I?

Thanks for the advice so far. I am going to try to breastfeed this one, and I can put the dental work off for a month or so but not much longer than that otherwise the teeth they need to fix might already be beyond saving and I just can't lose anymore.

YES!!!! there are virtually no medications you cannot take while breastfeeding, and many times even your doctor or pharmacist will be wrong about it (been there done that). if you can take percoset after a c-sec in the hospital, im sure you will be fine taking tylenol or tylenol w/codiene or antibiotics or whatever the dentist might give you. I was breastfeeding when i had my wisdom teeth removed.

I would urge you to at least try to breastfeed if possible so you don't look back and wish you had had the experience it is a wonderful thing with all the drawbacks, and there are many. If possible do you think you could put off your dental work for just a few weeks? Then you could get settled breastfeeding and then use formula while you pump your milk while using the meds the milk won't be good for the baby but you can discard it and not have dried up in the interim. After the meds clear your body you can go back to breastfeeding. As far as depression just because you had a bout of it with the first one doesn't mean you doomed to repeat it I didn't, and my breastfeeding actually helped me work through it. My time quietly bonding with my baby was helpful for me. There is no shame in not breastfeeding but I would hate to see you miss this experience. Good Luck feel free to e-mail me if you need to talk.

Absolutely you should! Breastfeeding actually released hormones that fight off depression; and if you do need meds for PPD, there are some that are safe for nursing mothers. As for the dental work, you can pump and dump milk if it is full of meds, then resume nursing after it's passed through. If you have a lot of concerns, I would talk to the dentist. Good luck!

you need to ask your doctor.
you could both breast feed AND bottle feed. this way your baby is getting the antibodies she/he needs, then when you are having work done..you can pump before the work is done..then when that runs out you can bottle feed until you are off the medication and are okay to breast feed again.

i had a hard time with breastfeeding all of my kids. i would loose my milk after a couple of months..so i had to really work at it! even if they only got ONE breast bottle all day and the rest were formula is was better than nothing!
the breast milk is better for them, yes, but if you can't do it exclusively don't feel bad..even just an ounce a day is great for her/his immunity! don't think on the big scale of things, even the smallest amount counts.

You should breastfeed, as it is more healthy for the baby and helps him/her to develop a better immune system. That being said, check with your dentist/oral surgeon about your meds and breastfeeding first. Maybe you should hold-off on the teeth work.

You should definately breastfeed your baby. As far as getting your dental done why don't you wait for a while so that you're baby can get all the nutrients he/she will need from you.

You could always pump milk in advance and store it when you are going to get work done on your teeth. You definetly should breastfeed children don't get sick as often.

I breast fed both of my children. And you probably won't get depressed if you do breast feed. Your weight will go down quickly. Your breast will be lovely (after your nipples get tough and stop bleeding) and your baby will be oh so happy to be drinking Mommy's sweet milk that is easy on baby's tummy. Formula smells like poo...ever tried it? It tastes just awful.

You can, just make sure the meds the dentist gives you will not harm the baby.
