The term "Holy War" is an oxymoron. War is not sacred. Unless God sends a bunch of flying angels, it is not a 'Holy War'. It is simply a bunch of self-serving humans that want to have another excuse for taking what they want.

a war fought for supremacy based on exploited beliefs of populations unaware of the usage of the word holy as an excuse.

economic and geographic interest are the real reasons for almost any war, even those called holy. the word is used as a cover to justify the attack on other religions, races, or kinds of people without being called extremist or discriminatory.

A war in which one or both combatant feel that their religion compels them to fight against the other (not just wars between countries of two different religions: WWI would not count simply because the Ottoman Empire was a participant).

Also note that "jihad" translates as "struggle," NOT as "holy war."

I think it means how some people beleive in god and some people don't. All religions want control over religions. The Catholics want everyone to beleive in god. Buddists want everyone to beleive in Buddah. Everyone is constantly fighting over it. A "Holy War" if you will.

A war justified by GOD! Leaders like George Bush and the leader of Israel actually speak to God one-on-one and the voice of God tells them war is ok because you are doing it for me.

I would define it as one religious country fighting another country with a different religion or ideas.

A war fought on the basis that my religion is better than yours, and in my God's name, I'm going to come and kill all of your people to prove I'm right.

A simple back and forth argument won't suffice, because you and your opinions bother me, so I kill you. I kill you hard and fast. Saheeeeeb!
