wasp's are extremely territorial just because you don't think your disturbing them doesn't me they share the same feelings. it may not seem like it's that big a threat now doesn't mean it won't become one. If your not willing risk removing it yourself cal an extermintator.
If you are willing to risk it there is a way I know of that should work well. Wait till later in the evening close to dusk when there settled down some make a smoke can large enough to smoke the area to disorient the wasp's and place on ground under the nest to so when it rise smoke will hit it ( smoke calms bees but will disorient wasps and hornets) buy a good wasp spray that has a long shooting spray ( geting close might just get ya stung to all high hell) theres a few good ones that spray 12 to 17 feet bout two cans for a nest that size. dress to minimize getting stung and just spray away soak the nest all the way through let set and if any return after about an hour do it agiain then take then nest down.
the smoke can is to draw attention away from you but make sure smoke can is just creating smoke and not flame best to move it clear of where it might get spray in it and flame up .

RE:
What should I do about a large wasp nest in a tree in my yard?
I have the world's largest WASP nest in a tree outside my bedroom window. Should it be removed? If so, how? The nest is about 1 foot wide by two feet high. It's big. Will the wasps live there for just one season? Are they telling all their friends to come stay at my place? I don't want...

Man! That's a big wasp's nest. Yes they are a danger to you and your pets and no they won't just live there a season and go away.
Go to the hardware store and buy wasp spray. It comes in aerosol cans and will spray as far as twenty feet. (I'd buy a couple cans for that big a nest) Get your spray and stand at a safe distance from the nest (as far away as possible) Spray the hell out of the nest. Come back the next day and spray it all over again. In a couple of days the wasps will be history and you can knock the nest out of the tree and dispose of it.
Be careful. Stay back. Spray it like cake frosting; top to bottom. Come back and spray it again.
Rest in piece you nasty, stinging beasts.

At night, perferably late evening when you have some daylight left.
Get some wasp killer - they make some that shoot up to 10 feet.
Cover as much of your body with clothing that you can.
Get as close to the wasp nest as you dare.
EMPTY the ENTIRE CAN into the hole in the bottom of the nest.
Keep a strong steady spray into the hole. You'll see wasps try to escape, but they will get soaked with the wasp killer and fall to the ground.
Literally empty the entire can into the hole. There may be one or two flying around. You have to ignore them and stand your ground.
When it's done, leave quickly.

Wasps can be dangerous, or lethal if you get a few good stings, or even one or two if you're allergic to them.
I'd suggest calling in a preofessional to remove them. It might be a little more expensive, but they'll generally also check the area for other nests, and you'll avoid the risk of stings and let them take the heat. Plus they're more thorough...

If they are up and out of the way just leave them alone. Teach the kids to leave them alone. Co-existence is good. I don't know what it is but hornets must be here for some reason. And it is not to sting you. They have lives and a purpose just like you do. All the ''kill it!'' mentality is enough to make you wonder what is going on in this world. PS If you ever need first aid for any bug bite - use RAW ONION. Just cut one open and scrape it to make a pulp and place the pulp on the bite. It takes away the sting or the bite - I use it for fire ant bites, mosquito bites and a couple times for wasp and bee stings - but it was because Istepped on one and leaned my hand on the other. (Entirely my fault)

I wouldn't do this yourself but one thing my dad has done before is after dark go spray it with wasp spray this way they won't sting you and they are all in the nest. Like I said though I wouldn't do this yourself I would call an expert if it is really big♥
