Robert, The short answer is "hard work and a lot of it". It sounds like you are an amateur racer, if you've been racing for 4 years now you must have learned a lot about the sport already... Sponsorship is just another aspect. Unforntunately, its part of the sport that most people forget about - the business part! I can tell you from experience that getting racing sponsorship is difficult, esp. for amateur/sportsman racers ... but don't listen to people who say it is impossible, because its IS possible - again I speak from experience.
First, you are not "asking for money" you MUST be providing a service. But before you can provide that service (or even offer it) you must know what it is. Sit down write it down ... "What can you provide to your sponsor?".
Second , they are not sponsoring your car ... but your TEAM - you have far more to offer than just the car. This includes you ... you become a profession spokeperson - so you must act like one!
Once you know your service, have broschures, pictures and such to help descibe it ... start marketing it. Go out there and start talking to companies ... and be ready to collect A LOT of "No's". 1 yes to 99 nos is probably doing well.
Lastly, don't trust any of these "Sponsorship marketing" companies and sites out there ... its all about footwork and networking your way to someone with money who needs what you have to offer.

Good Luck!

Send perspective sponsors a detailed sponsorship proposal (sounds complex but its not really!!) which has details on what are the benefits to them to sponsor you e.g. advertising, free tickets or exclusive rights & what they receive according to the value of their sponsorship e.g. for $2500 they get a certain amount of advertising space and signage for the races, whereabouts they can place their logo on your vehicle and/or overalls/leathers/helmet etc. Your not necessarily asking for money you're proposing a formal business proposal that is mutually beneficial --> the key is to sell that idea!!

Hope that helps!

hey man if you figure out the sponsor trick let me know .. but just a little side note about fuel . I race out of pocket to and I use aviation fuel ..not jet fuel but regular airplane fuel .. its got just as much octane as sunoco 108 but is about $1.75 cheaper .. depending on what kind of racing you are doing

go to small races and do good, they might pick you up. even if its a little sponser you will work your way up the line and might get a international sponser online with ya.
