Of course they don't...technology has changed a lot of things. I think he means that movies today are not as good as they used to be.

It is true. Much of our modern movies are made digitally, whereas they were most recently done on VHS, and before that, Beta, then back to a film spool. The quality and attributes of the recording are better. But, in my opinion, movies aren't supposed to look real. They're called actors because they are portrayed something or someone that they are not in real life.
Also, movies are made with so much violence, sex, vulgarity, and issues that people just simply don't want their children seeing, no matter what rating the government says is appropriate. The old movies are innocent, and even the ones that weren't considered "clean" back then are so far from what we are watching now. Back then, a woman wouldn't dare use foul language. And for a long time, it was considered unladylike to smoke, until the long filters came along and made smoking look more glamorous.
The saying is true...."They just don't make movies like they used to!"

The movies of the 30's and 40's left a lot to the imagination. Children and adults could enjoy the same movie at different levels of understanding. I remember seeing movies when I was a child and not realizing what they were about. When I see them now on TCM, I am surprised they passed the censors.

It is true. Back in the day movies were plot and character driven which made for entirely mor enejoyable expereince. However, now movies are special effects driven which really takes away from the overall quality of cinema. My favorite movies from the last year like Crash and Thank You for Smoking were plot driven rather than effects driven, which I think is why Crash won best picture. It is a movie that was made like they used to be. Your Dad is correct.

they used to make movies way different back in the day. Instead of hireing all sorts of staff and casts and what not, they just got some old dude off the street and slapped make up on him. Then they would roll cameras and begin to throw various sized rocks and cheese wheels at him untill he was close to death. They would then take his wallet and remove the contents of it and divide them between the movie crew. If there was a picture of his family in his wallet the crew member who took it would then tell the old guy that he would take care of his family for him. while saying this he would like the picture and touch himself in the pants. then they would stare the old, three quarters dead guy in the eyes and say "haha gotcha!" and pack up their gear and leave. It was all a joke on the old guy. Thats how they made movies back in the day, and yes, they dont make movies like they used to.

Depends on the type of movie you are referring to. The horror movies are so much more graphic now days. They were left more to the imagination back in the day. I like the old mystery and love stories of the 40's and 50's.

Dude did you even see Crash, It had less of a plot then any movie I've seen in years, all it was, was a series of losely related people displaying racism and then it ended with your typical feel good hollywood ending......
The only thing thats really changed in movies in the past 30 years or so is the cost of producing, and the things that are taboo.

They don't make movies like they used to since they invented cinema. Technology, changing tastes in acting styles and narratives, and the business of moviemaking have resulted in constant evolution. But one thing is for sure: there always have been good, bad, and mediocre films for all times.

Probably because they're running out of ideas. Which is why they keep remaking movies that have already been done. Your father may be right.

movies before the 90's were based more on plot lines and content whereas newer movies get away with having somewhat hollow content by increasing visual effects.
