I am taking a year off between undergrad and grad school and I need to find a job for a year. I would like to get a somewhat decent job which I'm assuming requires dedication. What should I tell an employer if they ask me where I see myself in the near future if I plan on leaving after a year?

Say something very general like "While I'm not sure exactly of where I'll be in five years, I see myself working hard toward advancing my life goals."

You never, ever mention to an perspective employer that you are planning to leave them. Just tell them that you'd like to eventually move up in the company. Also, consider taking a contract position than you needn't worry about that type of question. PEACE!

Talk about your confidence and determination and how you set new goals for yourself each day. If it seems like you are an ambitious person, they will believe that you will want to rise high in the company.

Don't tell them that you are planning to stay only one year. Tell them that in five years you see yourself finishing your graduate degree, gaining more experience in the industry.

Tell them what they want to hear! That is simple because they are wanting you to meet THEIR expectations, and if you are telling them you are leaving in 1 year more than likely they will not hire you!

Be honest. They'll find out soon enough, and if you lie, you wouldn't be able to get a good reference if you needed one in the future.
