I am working as a waitress at a denny's restrant in japan. and I am a japanese. and the restrant is near by some hotels so many visiters to japan go there. (especially american, chinese, korean) and I realized that ,when Im getting orders, most americans say something really selfish. ex,they try to order something not on the menu, and if I say No,they ask me why,(is there chef in there? or you just warm frozen food up,that's why you cant serve me that?) and they tell me to take something in the dish away ( can you take bacons out from this spaghetti?) (can you warm up the beer?) in the case of japanese, we never ever do such things,if i dont like bacon,I just take them out myself.coz I feel bad for the cook, waitress. Im really sorry for people who felt bad after reading this.but I just would like to know why they do that. if it was cultual thing, then that's fine. and I myself, like America.want to visit there oneday.and Im not saying that everyone is like that.but a lot .

I kind of understand where you are coming from. In states you can everything to your taste and i think it is very normal. I mean why eat something you don't like? For instance I am a vegetarian and if I am ordering pasta, I do not want any meat touching my food. Not that I cannot separate it myself, but because I can taste the meat and i get sick.

However, I understand how it is in your culture. I never looked at the situation from that side. I would say even though I see your point, you should understand why people would ask for different food.

Often food isn't pre-mixed here (as a sign of freshness) so it is easy to leave out an ingredient. so for example, removing bacon wouldn't be hard. Plus there is a moto that most businesses run by saying 'the customer is always right'. Asking for something to be left out is not considered rude, but at the same time if the item cannot be left out it is usually accepted without question.
If the waitress does have to go to extra trouble to leave out the item, then usually people compensate with a larger tip then normal.

Also.. i don't think an American would ever ask for the beer to be warmed up. Warm beer is not an American thing as it tends to be to some Europeans.

Not all Americans do that, and no, it is not natural. Maybe the people who can afford to travel to Japan are very wealthy and are used to demanding things (?), but average Americans are not like that.

I personally don't do that - I like to just order and be done with it. If something has something included that I don't care for, I either pick it out/don't eat it - or I don't order the item to begin with. The only reason I can see is if someone is allergic to something and it is a serious health issue. Otherwise they are just being a pain.

You should always travel if you can and see what places are really like. I hope you do visit the US - it's a very nice country for the most part and we have alot of variety in people and places, everything from cowboys to astronauts, the Grand Canyon to the Empire State building.

Sounds somewhat normal to me. There are two types of people who eat out here. Those of us who look at a menu, make a decision on what we want to eat from it, and order. Sure, I may ask for no tomato's, or hold the onions, but that is very normal here.

Then, there are those obnoxious dorks who have to have everything their way, regardless if its on the menu or not. "I want a hamburger, but could you cut it into squares, and put some shrimp on it?" They seem to go out of their way to make the order as difficult and time consuming as possible. These people are annoying, and feel free to have your chef spit in their food.

It's very common to request that something be left out. I hate onions, I always ask that no onions be put in my food. That's just the way things are done here. Unless someone is a real jerk about it, it's not seen as hard on the cooks or servers.

I am a waitress too, and honey, people are VERY picky about what they eat! I would never think to give someone a hard time about what is served. I just don't eat the stuff I don't like.
Sometimes people give exact specifications on how it should be made, and you just want to say to them "stay home and cook it yourself".
Picky, rude people.

We Americans feel it's our duty to give the customer whatever they want. We do anything to make them happy. The customers are the only source of income so they can have what they want.

i always order stuff on the menu but i also ask for no onions or no tomato. i always thought it was a regular thing to do. thats what resturaunts are for...special orders that you don't have to cook yourself.
