Cos it seems to me that a team plays some teams fewer than they do other teams.

They do play some teams more often. You play division opponents more often than the rest of the league you're in, and you only cross over to play the other league a handful of times.

Schedules were redone a few years back to make the largest part of your schedule be your division opponents.

You play the teams in ur divison 19 times or so. during interleauge play, you only play one division, as teams in the AL East play the NL East.
