Well, considering you like Guns n' Roses, I say buy a decent Epiphone Les Paul and a Marshall MG 15 - 30 watt amp. That's a pretty nice combo for a beginner, and youl have the stuff that Slash has! But definantly, I would recomend an epiphone Les Paul and a 15 - 30 watt Marshall MG. As far as advice goes, think of guitar as a way to express emotions, not that 20 min you have to spend on scales everyday. When you practice, just have fun and enjoy it, otherwise it won't be fun in the long run. Also, don't just learn tab. You need some music theory.Look around the interent and learn your open chords, bar chords, major scales, minor scales, and blues scales (minor penatonic). If you learn those things instead of just using tab, you'll develop a good ear and understand the guitar. Good luck! Rock on!

Learn the chord shapes for D, G and A7 first. There are many basic rock songs you can fake up reasonable well with just these three.

Lots of Status Quo and Lynyrd Skynyrd can be done this way, but if you begin by playing the rhythm:

"Shave and a haircut, 10 cents."

on just the D chord you will find it easy to work out the rest of Bo Diddley's 'Mona' (an old song, but play it at a dance and watch them go).

Once you have the idea of basic chord changes and varying the rhythm with your right hand go to one of the many tab sites and begin on more advanced stuff.

There are so many websites on the topic that I don't even know where to start. Do a google search for guitar chords or chord chart, go to www.youtube.com and search for guitar instruction. Do some browsing and you'll find a plethora of resources. I promise it's easy.

teach yourself your own system, you'll sound loads more interesting than anybody else. for example start by playing the fattest string (E) with no frets pressed down and then find the notes on other strings that sound good when played at the same time. after you have some interesting sounds try picking two notes with the thick string. you now have a chord :) explore rhythmn and counting, usually everything works round a count of four. when you have exhausted the thick string, re tune it to another note then try again
