1st, I choose to empty the Recycle Bin myself - just in case.
I have WinXP. In Programs, Accessories, System Tools, you will find several things to do:
2. Run a "Disk Cleanup."
3. Defrag. This will gather all parts of a file, used and free space. Makes access quicker.
4. In Tools, Internet Options, delete cookies
5. In Tools, Internet Options, cl Delete Files, cl Delete all offline content.
6. In Tools, Internet Options, Clear History
Close everything and Restart.
Periodically, cl Start, Run, type IPconfig renew
Make sure you have updated all your programs and have the latest drivers.
This should help.

Assuming that you have Windows XP... Follow these steps:
1) Make a list of all the applications in the Start->Programs that you don't need anymore.
2) Go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add remove programs
3) Use the list you created and move to that program.. select it and click remove till you have exhausted the list. Some programs may ask you to restart the computer and that is OK. You can continue with the rest of the list after computer restarts.
4) launch Start --> Programs --> accessories --> system tools --> disk cleanup
5) cleanup all your temporary files, redundant restore points, unwanted accessory programs etc.
6) Optional , Run the Disk - Defragmenter to defragment the desk for better performance. To run the above program Start --> Programs --> accessories --> system tools --> Disk Defragmenter.
7) Happy cleaning and system tuning.
Warning!! - Never just go into program files folder and just delete the programs.

There is a very effective free utility for this called Easy Cleaner:
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/dwnloads.htm
Also, if you want to delete a certain type of file from your hard drive, you can do a search for it, then delete what it finds. Be careful with this one though, you don't want to delete important system files. Some files you know are safe though, like ones with the extension of .mp3 or .wav, for example. As long as you know what they're being used for or not and that you absolutely don't want them anymore. To search for a certain type of file, right click on a folder or drive icon and click Search. Then where it says "All of part of the file name" enter the name of the file, such as mysong.mp3 or to search for all mp3 files type in *.mp3
Remember that you need to uninstall programs, not just delete them. If you just delete them it will leave remnants around in other places.

be very careful about what you try to delete...you dont want to del a sys op program...when you delete certain things they may actually still be there and you are unaware of it...go into your explorer and check it out.....also if you want to optimize your systems performance you might want to defrag...
