First, clean the walls completly with tsp and a scrub brush and get off anything loose, dirty, or gumy. You can get tsp at the hardware store in the paint section. If something wont come off try removing it with goofoff, you can find goofoff at the hardware store too. If you find any mold or anything similar you can use bleach and water to wash it off. This is the most important step, get them walls clean, very clean!!!!!!!!!!
Next, tape (The 3m blue painters tape is the best) off anything you do not want paint on and remove all wall plates, outlet covers, etc. and turn off the power before removing them!! If you need power for something like a powered roller use an extension cord. In addition, do not forget to put down a drop cloth or canvis on the floor so no paint gets on the wood flooring, carpet,etc.. whatever you have.
Second, paint with both a brush and roller. You will need a brush for places a roller can't get into. Buy two brushes, a 1 & 1/2" brush for smaller and tighter places and a 3" for larger areas. Buy quality brushes, stay away from the cheaper 2 dollar and 3 dollar jobs. Paint with the tips of the brush and use looong smooth strokes back and forth or up and down, not both. Be consitent, if you go up and down do that throughout the entire wall or portion of the wall you is paiting.
Buy a quality roller, power rollers are the nicest .. you dont need a pan and there is no mess. Its okay to go up and down with the roller here and there but for the most part you should paint in a W shape or formation. And as a side note, you can use a paint called "kilz" if you have any mold that has been washed off with bleach.
Third, repeat step 2. Let the paint dry and put on a second coat. Wait 2 hours between coats. You should not need a 3rd coat but if you do the paint will let know ..the paint will look thin or not thick enough. If you can see some of the color the wall was before you started painting then you definitly need a 3rd coat.
Finally, after the paint is dry you can remove the tape and reinstall any wall plates that have been removed. Keep all power to this room off until after the paint is dry and all wall plates have been reinstalled.

Put an old pillowcase over the end of a broom and wipe down the walls - just get the cobwebs off. Paint the edges with a 2-4" brush, whatever feels comfortable. Then roll the rest by getting a moderate amount of paint on the roller, not a whole lot and roll on in a W pattern. If you shake the paint well, you won't see where you stopped or started. If you need to use more than one can of paint, stop at the corners or mix the cans together in a larger plastic bucket and then use.

Clean the walls with a damp cloth or basic home cleaner if they need it. If the wall is a dark color already use a primer before painting the walls. You should use a roller vertically, but make sure that you do it evenly and at a steady pace. Buy painters tape and tape over the edge of windows and anything else that you don't want to get paint on. Put cloth over the windows and anything else that is larger. You can also use painter's tape to make a break in the wall also. This way the colors can't mix. Good luck! :-)

it just takes time and patience. Have fun with it, just use a mild soap and water to clean the walls if they are dirty and if they are real bad use a primer product called KILLS it covers everything and seals it very well.
the best way to "split paint" a wall is by using the blue painters tape. Roll out the wall vertically and roll over the line you want to split. Let dry and tape the line you want for effect. Then repaint with the color you want it to be and remove tape when paint is wet and let dry. Be sure to remove tape when paint is wet, if you don't the paint will stick to it and peal off when you pull the tape.
You may need to do two coats if so just repeat the steps in order or do them 2 at a time.
Like I said just have fun with it !!! Painting can be fun and bring out your creative side if you let it !!.
Good luck....and a glass of wine may help you through it

I used to paint for a living. There are two rolling techniques. you start at the top and make either a v or a w with the paint moving from left to right and without picking up the roller fill it in moving back from right to left. If you have any cleanup you can do a primer coat using a product called Kilz. it's a good primer and kills mold and other things on the wall. Good luck

I really like to clean the walls with a rag and about 1/4 cup of bleach in a gallon of warm water. Let it dry about 10 min. I paint up and down, side to side just to make sure to get everything. Use the blue painters tape. All you have to do it tape off a section.

Start by washing the walls with tsp, or another cleaning solution. then tape the edges, and put down drop cloths, then paint. as long as you get full coverage, you shouldn't be able to see any lines between the start or finish if you use the same can of paint the whole way. If it looks blotchy, wait a day, and apply another coat. it doesn't really matter which way you paint, as long as you get a fairly even coverage.

Jason did a nice job for you. tsp and bleach is the best cleaner to use. wear gloves and be well ventilated. rinse the walls after you wash them and let dry. remember to always work into the wet paint. cut in using a 2 inch angle brush. roll walls from top to bottom in long strokes. once you roll up and down and spread the paint roll side to side to ensure even coverage.
