Go on Ebay. 100Mhz Pentium is all your going to need. I bought a very nice IBM Thinkpad on Ebay for $50 and it came working perfectly with a case and all accesories (even the battery works like new!) And you can get open office for free (with total file format compatibility with Microsoft Office files) if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on Microsoft's office just to get word and excel.

if all you need is Word and\or Excel all you need is a basic laptop.

I've seen local stores such as Best Buy, Circuit City, etc selling such laptops for $399 (usually after rebates)

Also the link below is a store I have bought from for many years with very reasonable prices.......

Watch local papers for ads. In my city we get many ads in the Sunday paper. They are the first thing I look for. Also, check out Dell or HP. Look for refurbished. You can pretty well "build your own" computer. You might even catch them with a free shipping deal.

YOUR BEST BET IS TO FIND A STORE NEAR YOU THAT SELLS NOTHING BUT LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS AS THEY VERY OFTEN HAVE BETTER DEALS FROM THE DEALERS --BARRING THAT ONLINE MAY BE THE BEST BET, THE DRAWBACK BEING THAT YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH IT A LITTLE FIRST TO SEE IF ITS WHAT YOU WANT AND YOU CAN'T ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT IT----IF YOU LIVE IN A LARGE METROPOLITAN AREA YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A STORE THAT JUST DEALS LAPTOPS THOUGH --------HOPE THAT HELPS
