It is called Alcoholic Anonymous because anything you say within the group is considered confidential. So if you made a murder confession, it is information that can not be divulged to a third party. If it ever is, it would be grounds for an appeal in the case of a conviction. So, whatever you say in the group to gain sobriety is protected and anonymous in the eyes of the world because the group itself is a haven from the outside world for the alcoholic to recover in.
In AA, the compulsory self-introduction is for the sake of self-awareness. The first step of the twelve step program is to admit that you have a problem. So, the self-introduction as an alcoholic means that you have admitted that you have a problem and that is the first step towards solving it.

lol..nice one..but i think it's meant on a deeper level...like people will not judge you regardless of who you are when you go there...
besides we can't call everyone anynymous...everyone would just go nuts
