Gore won the popular vote and Bush got the electoral vote. Bush had a massive base rally in 2004 to barely win. Do you think on social issues Americans are more liberal or conservative?

It's been proven actually that on an issue by issue basis, Americans appear liberal. Then, when you ask them if they are liberal, conservative, or in the middle - most of them end up in the middle.

We're more conservative than most developed nations (the fact that we share things like the death penalty, "don't ask don't tell", and other such nonsense with nations like China, Iran, Saudi Arabia should tell people something, but they won't get it.), but more liberal than we used to be.

I love how CR accused you of changing history, in 2000 Gore had 48.4% of the popular vote to 47.9% for Bush. The other candidates that year got 3.7% of the popular vote. I would not say less than 50% constitutes a mandate.

In 2004 Bush received 50.7% to Kerry's' 48.3%. Again 2% does not a mandate make.

But in answer to your question yes the country is more liberal than the Republican majority is willing to concede, that is why I think we are starting to see the beginning of the end for now.

I think, for the most part, most Americans are Conservative. Even those that claim to be liberal. If you look at how most people live their lives they are Conservative. Sure we should feed the poor, that is WE, not the government. If you are hungry in America all you have to do is stop by any local church or food bank, and they will GIVE you a bag of food to take home. I know people that do it right here in my home town every week. There is no excuse for putting your child to bed hungry. This is the most compassionate country on planet earth. So thank your lucky stars that you are here and not elsewhere in the world.

I disagree that Bush won either time, all the evidence points otherwise, however to answer your main question...

Americans are more socially liberal, but fiscally conservative. Any American you ask would support feeding the poor, however the fiscal issue in how to do it is the differencemaker for many.

Yes. [how's that for an answer?]

I actually think that on social issues, Americans are both more liberal and conservative than some nominal middle point. Americans from both sides are social conservatives on some points, but socially liberal on other points. And nearly everyone is different from everyone else about which points they are liberal or conservative on.

Just my observation.

I think that on most issues, Americans are liberals. Why?

1. Americans support a woman's right to choose. Not overwhelmingly, but Americans do not think that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
2. Americans support stem-cell research.
3. Americans support universal health care.
4. Americans do not support giving tax cuts to the rich.

Why do Republicans get as many votes as they do? Because Democrats are inaccurately portrayed as flip-floppers, weak, and out of the mainstream.

Liberal. Look at the polls. Last time i checked, the polls said that bush had a low 40 to high 30 percent approval rate. Also, read rolling stones article called DID BUSH STEAL THE ELECTION? it has some interesting facts. You can find it at the rolling stone website

The term "social conservative" is an oxymoron.
Americans are much more conservative now than they have been at any time, since the 1950s, especially concerning social issues/

Americans are deeply divided over moral, social and economic issues. I pray that education and reason will overcome emotions and name-calling before the country is torn apart.
